Julie Budet, also known as Yelle, is a Parisian princess of pop. My French is really not good enough to translate what she's saying here, but you really don't have to understand what she's saying to appreciate the catchy goodness. If you are so curious to google for a translation though, you'd find that this song is quite dirty. So let's re-wind 15 years to 1994.<br />One of their first big hits. I loved this song on so many levels. The music video was great too. A song based on being the nerd in high school, but a nerd who loves. This is the kind of music I wish Weezer still did. This is a nerd band (come on, the video is based on Happy Days, it doesn't get much nerdier then that).<br />Also, remember that this video wasn't premiered on MTV or Much music, but on the Windows 95 CD after you installed it on your computer. Well Globus was formed from a large amount of Producers, musicians and vocalists from Immediate Music. Immediate music is the company that makes most of the music you hear in cinema trailers.<br />So Globus is sort of a side project for them, Coming from a large demand in the UK to hear more of their distinctive music without having to buy 20 different movie soundtracks. Last summer, I was all over The Veronicas, before they hit big in North America btw. My friend Sara showed me the music of her friend who's part of a group called Scotch. They're based here in Montreal, very local, very underground. They have a very jazzy smoky piano bar feel and some awesome awesome instrumentalists. The person who really takes the spotlight here, however, is the lead singer/piano/guitar, Declan O'Donovan. Not only does this guy have some tight tight piano solos, he has the sexiest voice you'll ever hear. The way he croons those lyrics, a weaker woman would feel violated. There's a touch of tribal feel with MIA's techno mix, it's a great celebration of a song, beautifully reflecting the theme of the movie. This little lady is only 16, but don't underestimate her voice. Such is the case with Ambulette, the indie band started by Maura Davis. Or so I thought. Prior to Ambulette, Maura Davis was also a part of another band, Denali. After some research, I found that Ambulette isn't exactly broken up? Or this was the indication on their Myspace page. I'm still a little cloudy on their status. The good news is that Maura Davis is also singing in another band Glös, for certain, I'll post both Denali and Glös music later on. The first time I heard them, their sound blew me away. There's just so much going on, and above all, it's sooooo catchy! It's difficult for me to introduce bands that are already well known; it almost feels like they don't require introductions. Here we go anyways. A Perfect Circle was formed by the lead master mind of Tool, Maynard James Keenan, hence you would hear a lot of similarities in the two bands. For some strange reason, I love listen to APC, but can't find much appeal in Tool. Weird. <br /><br />Moving on, the new presidency is marked by a very prominent and often repeated word: diplomacy. This song seems to be perfect to mark the end of the Bush era, and a time to begin reconciliation. Even during Obama's inauguration speech, hope for peace resounded. They rode on the 2nd wave of ska.<br />Now some people ask me: "Waves of ska?"<br />A brief rundown. Ska came out in the 50's and 60's in Jamaica and was a lot more reggae oriented then it is today. Ska bands were stereotypically from the poorer class of people, and this music was their way of escape. Played in small clubs and bars that many workers would come to after hours. This wave didn't see much outside of central America.<br />The Second wave came in the 70's and 80's, The band I am showcasing today was at the front of the new wave. This was known as the 2 tone wave, because many americans and euopeans played in the band, making them multicultural.<br />Finally we have the late 90's, which the Third wave is just dying out now. SDC is a trio of amazingly, outrageously talented percussionists, who carry around drumsticks and bang on whatever makes sounds. <br /><br />I was catching up on what they've been doing the last few years and found they've come out with a new album. I thought the first one was obscure, but I can't find this new album ANYWHERE, and needless to say the youtube video I found isn't that great either. Hopefully, you'll get the gist of their sound. At the beginning, one of the members actually uses a welder as an instrument... It's intense. <br /><br />They used to be more pure percussion, and have added singers and other instrumentalists as features on their new album. I can't say I'm a big fan of these changes but they're still pretty effing awesome. The second video is just one of the guys, walking around some city and banging on random stuff. He does some pretty crazy rhythms, and there's a cameo by drummer of 30 Seconds to Mars. They're an upbeat pop band from Nebraska, I mean, what can be more upbeat than having a tap dancer? That's right, one of the "instrumentalists" is a tap dancer, in replacement for a drummer. Boyce Avenue is the three Manzano brothers and an odd ball, Stephen Hatker. The brothers began playing music at the age of ~14. Their music is upbeat and umm... I'm not good at describing music past "Awesome". <br /><br />I know one of my roommates find the lead singer's voice really abrasive, and I can see what she means, although it's weirdly addictive to me. I guess it's one of those, love it or hate it sounds. <br /><br />Once again, video and sound quality not very good since I couldn't find a single one of their songs on youtube and had to make my own. They've only been around since, well, longer then me. They got together back in 1984, released their first CD in 1988, and have been pumping out new CD's almost every year or two since. Sure, the band members have changed a lot, and the lead guitarist/songwriter, Jon Schaffer, is the only original member still there, but they still rock!<br />What impresses me about these guys is that they are one of the few great Progressive Metal bands out of North America, 99% of them seem to come from the U.K. and Japan (oddly). Iced Earth also does a lot to appeal to their fanbase. They know what their listeners want, take a lot of their feedback, and use it to improve their music. They have done the CD "Tribute to the Gods" which was a cover CD of all their favourite bands and songs, another CD retold famous historical battles such as Waterloo through Heavy Metal, and a whole CD based off the comic character "Spawn." Jon Schaffer is even planning to create a graphic novel based on his character and band mascot, Set Abominae.<br />Also, with lack of finding a non-live performance of this song, I used the AMV I watched when I first heard these guys years ago. I know this is a music blog, but Final Fantasy 9 was one of the greatest of the series, and is seriously under rated. Just think of the setting: Steampnk + Midevil Fantasy + awesome magical summon monsters = Flawless Victory. Sure, the main villain was (very) flaky, and the final boss came from no where, but the rest of the story and characters are solid.<br />Anyways, enough Video Game ranting, here is the video... They definitely deserve more than the one hit stardom. So this is one of their more recent songs, Grey Weather. <br /><br />Gregory & the Hawk is actually just a name that Meredith Godreau adopted for her musician alter-ego. Yes, that is her angelic voice that you're hearing. Meredith is one of those musicians that can just pick up an instrument and go. Please correct me if I'm characterizing this genre incorrectly. For the life of me I can't figure out how I found out about Sutrastore, but I found their name on my Zune a few days ago, and thought "well I don't recall that name..." so I listened to it and it was the most pleasant surprise I got that day. Sutrastore's music features sometimes a female singer, sometimes a male singer; this is one of the only songs where they both sing together, and it sounds just divine. The girl has one of those raspy jazzy voices but it's so soothing at the same time. However, the thing I love the most about this song, is that solo at the beginning that sounds like a... harmonica? Crush 40 has 2 CD's and have been around for a few years, but the music that they only seem to be really known for is what they have written for the Sonic video games. Open Your Heart was originally done for Sonic adventure on the Dreamcast, but was remixed for the CD "True Blue: Sonics Best Music Hits." Crush 40 does a lot of good music that is both fast paced, but has deep emotional meaning to it, and I'm not just saying that to try and promote video game music, check out their pre-sonic stuff, or anything else they have written. It is all good.<br />Now the video itself that I found....<br />I filtered through countless sonic AMV's and VMV's until I found this: Doctor Who. Having only been together a few years, they've risen quickly from obscurity to playing <span style="font-style:italic;">David Letterman</span>. <br /><br />Their sound is raw and the singer's voice might seem a bit abrasive at the beginning, but trust me, it grows on you. Unfortunately, despite having toured with some really big names (Our Lady Peace, Circa Survive), and at one point being signed by Universal Records, The Working Title never did catch the whirlwind of fame. But what most people didn't know, is that he has come out with his own independent work.<br />He launched his CD "20th Century" to go along with his promoting a new T.V. show. And by T.V. show I mean Japanese anime.The anime itself is pretty good, as far as these types of shows. It's called Black Heaven: Heavy Metal Saves the Universe. The show references John Sykes career in a few ways, His bands breaking up to be with their families, members dying from drugs, marrying a roadie. But like all anime's it goes over the top (like using this song to power an intergalactic plasma cannon to fight aliens...)<br />Anyways, here is one of John Sykes latest works, and check out the anime if you're interested and really like this song (seriously, it's played at least 3 times in each episode).<br />I also added the instrumental version underneath. Today, I found out they're going to be playing here in Montreal at a local club on, of all days, Valentine's Day and more importantly, MY BIRTHDAY! Can you say destiny? <br /><br />So The Morning Benders are an indie band brought to you from the sunshine of California. They're recent debut album, Talking Through Tin Cans, is one of those few albums nowadays that are worthy of the ~15 dollars support-the-recording-labels fee as I like to call them. " My Heart has a History" . Love it. He is a classic, and in my opinion, on of the sexiest voices in country music! You would think he is some big burly rough farm boy with a voice like that... But unfortunately... he is not. Believe it or not, he used to be a nurse in a small town in southern Alberta! Haha! But he is awesome. One of those big stars who can fill huge stadiums for concerts, but then will do a small, free fundraiser at the local UFA for a children's wish foundation. He has a lot of new, interesting stuff. I am also including "Alberta Bound" just for kicks... This came out in 2005 at Alberta's centennial year, and brought out a lot of patriotic pride in us country folk. If you haven't heard of the Black Mages, they are a band put together by Nobuo Uematsu, the man who has written almost every song for the Final Fantasy Series since the 8-bit FF1. He put together the Black Mages to showcase his best works, and to not have them simply titled as "Video Game Music." The bands song list is mostly taken from older Final Fantasy soundtracks and re-worked, but they have a few original songs as well, there is usually one or two on each CD.<br />The song that I have picked is taken from Final Fantasy 8. To be honest, I had trouble picking which song to post, as I like many of them. Many popular bands, My Chemical Romance for one, started their career by opening for MSI. That's not to mention all the bands who list them as inspirational (well, punk inspirational) such as Sum 41, Rammstien, and Linkin Park.<br />So here is one of my favourite songs by them. It is fast and intense, just the way I like it :D<br />There is no video of this song, only live performances or anime videos. At least I am. They were another one of those bands that got selected during one of my crazy whirlwind phases to gather as much music as I can in a 2 hour period. Then they got lost in the maelstrom that is my music collection, until I uncovered them again this week. Now I'm listening to their album on repeat. <br /><br />The lead singer (you'll excuse me if I don't go wikipedia his name) has one of the most emotive voices I've ever heard, and the beautiful thing is when you look up youtube live performances of this band, his voice is just as spectacular without any processing. They have been turning out their own tunes for a short while, and are getting ready to release their first CD before the end of the year. This song in particular is a metal cover Ryu's theme from Street Fighter 2 (don't ask me how excited for Street Fighter 4 I am, the answer is usually Hadoken).<br />Their music involves a few covers that they have released on the internet, usually from video games (and a hilarious one of Chocolate Rain). But their CD will include almost all original music by them.<br />Being only two members strong, they are very focused on perfecting their instruments,so there is few vocals (if any) and all talent. Ra Ra Riot are close friends with another band I've posted before, Vampire Weekend, and you can kind of hear the similarities in their sound. Although they are still very distinct. My favourite part is definitely when the violins play a counter-melody against the voice. My heart skips a beat everytime I hear that part.<br /><br />This is my current obsession from them, I played it on repeat about 5 times before I stopped myself in case I get sick of them. The contest was mainly dominated by pop and folk songs for decades, but this Heavy Metal Band came out of nowhere, broke contest records, and was the first Hard Rock Bands to win the Eurovision Contest (and the first Finnish band as well).<br />These guys do almost anything public in their costumes. It's they're symbol, and they say that they were inspired by KISS for much of their influence. In their costumes they are rock stars, but in there everyday cloths, nobody knows that they are a heavy metal band. Their music videos are also well known for being different, almost always being a horror movie of it's own. This video being a small exception, they have two versions of it. Is it super cheesy, dorky, and nerdy? Yes, it sure is. But the point is, they are making songs that they can relate to and have fun singing. We've heard of "Nerd Metal" "Geek Rock" and maybe some "Video Game Rap", well prepare yourself for "Nerd Boybands!"<br />1337 STR33T Boys preform in many shows around the U.S.A. and Canada, and by shows I mainly mean anime and gaming conventions. Or at least that's how I've always envisioned it. <br /><br />It was funny how I actually came across BSS. I was in HMV, at one of those booths with a bunch of cds and a set of headphones, and I was looking for some new sound. One of the cds turned out to be pretty good so I found it on the supposed location and bought it. Thanks to the highly competent staff in retail, the cd (you guessed it, BSS) wasn't the same band I had listened to. Although it was a pleasant surprise, and I don't regret it one bit, I would still like to know who it was I was listening to at the booth.<br /><br />So BSS is a Canadian group composed of x amount of people (this number tends to change randomly), and their sound is kind of experimental rock I'm guessing... I'm really bad at categorizing genres (I could say this is because labeling is bad, but in reality I just don't know my genres very well). Once again, one of those bands where it was really difficult to choose just one song to post. When I mentioned Big D before I thought that they were a new band. Turns out they have been turning out tracks and CDs for around 13 years. They work almost independently, or did until that summer at warped tour where they were picked up by a record company. But the band still hits the road and supports themselves, giving over 200 shows and a new CD every year, these guys are really into their music.<br />They also live through their fans. It is known that when Big D and his band are traveling through with a tour, they have nothing more then a vehicle to carry them and their instruments. Fans usually open their doors and roll out bed mats for them to spend a night or two. Almost all the money earned at their gigs is used to support their next tour. These guys are really dedicated to their music!<br />So here I am posting a slightly different song by them today. I suggest you look up more from Rob Baulder (especially "Still Annoyed" a parody on Still alive from Bowser). He works often with Tom Smith, but Tom was recently hospitalized, so all his tours and songwriting stopped.<br /><br />Secondly, I couldn't find a good video by the original artists or the cover artists, so I made this myself in windows media maker. I am pretty much computer illiterate, so it is just a picture.<br /><br />The song itself reminded me too much of myself and my overactive imagination, and I am sure there are many people out there where this song hits too close to home as well. Ir is mostly directed towards us "geeks and nerds" with our dreams of being a princess or space hero, but holds meaning to many, if not all, other people as well. We fanyasize on some level, whether it's dreaming of just being rich, or being a midevil hero with magic powers. It is not weird, crazy, or psycho, it is normal, and we should embrace it. I love letting my imagination go in whatever direction it wants, and I follow it willingly. Without these "daydreams" we would not have creativity, art, or even the music we listen to on this blog. They have a rather popular song that has been playing on the radio rather often (I can't recall the name right now). I'm glad that after so many years this band has finally made it. Many people don't know this, but Apocalyptica has been playing for over a decade and a half. Being a band formed of simply cellos, they had quite the unique sound, especially when they make heavy metal. They often make covers from Mettalica songs, they also get the occasional singer who wishes to redo one of their songs with lyrics (such as their latest song on the radio, few people know it's a remix).<br /><br />Here is a video from ten years ago, Harmagoden. I love the creativity involved in re-making an already good song into something new and interesting. I love it when the cover takes the song in a completely new direction, a la Matt Weddle's 'Hey Ya', where the boisterous Outkast song is turned into a soulful guitar ballad.<br /><br />Another thing I love is appropriating so-called 'gangsta' language into my own vocabulary (see below video). People who know me well can often hear be refer to my friends as my 'bitches' or 'hos', as well as bidding adieu with a well placed peace out'.<br /><br />Ben Folds' cover of Dr.Dre's 'Bitches Ain't Shit' combines both of these things I love. Beyond being an interesting, innovative cover, it has alot of inherent value, and it's a good song. The haunting chord progression and his clear, honest voice really relate the sadness of the song -- a sadness that is lost among the aggressive beats of the original.<br /><br />(WARNING: If you have any problem with swearing, do not watch this video. This has led me to appreciate all kinds of music, finding gems of musical genius in the most unlikely places. It also leaves me listening to songs on repeat for hours, riding high on the waves of emotions that somehow the songwriters have managed to make me feel. Even better is when a song can invoke an entire memory. When I was young, my mom would listen to old Patsy Cline songs when she would make dinner. Since then, her voice automatically throws me back into my childhood, sitting in my room and hearing my mom downstairs, singing along while she fried onions and chopped vegetables. Patsy Cline is considered one of the quintessential figures in classic country music (sorry if I'm treading on your turf here, Karah!). She has a strong, low voice which practically breaks your heart when she sings about love. <br /><br />However, the main song choice of this post isn't a Patsy Cline song (but I'll post it after the main video for the sake of completeness). I'm posting a song by another singer, Nicole Atkins. Her voice is beautifully low and powerful as well, and she's got a strong sound reminiscent of Patsy Cline. Yay! Alright, here it goes... I will mostly be providing country pix as it is my fav music category. Don't hate me, it is actually really amazing. You get used to the twang quick, trust me, then it just becomes about the music! I love country music for a few reasons. Firstly, it reminds me of the simpler life. Life outside of busy city deadlines and social expectations. You know, wild and un-tamable cowboys kind of idea. Secondly, the songs are usually about innocent love and heart break (yes, lots of newer stuff isnt so innocent, but in general, this holds true), it is very rarely about randomly hooking up on the dance floor like other genres seems to only be focused on. And lastly, it definitely makes me want to have true love and faith in my life... it brings me back to being a teenager, when we all were unjaded by the world, and thought that anything and everything was possible, just puts me in a good mood! On that note, my first post, a newly found favourite of mine, Jason Blaine's "My First Car". It is about the memories he had in his first "ol' rust bucket". This is a blast, from even my dads past.<br />But I would also like to take a moment to talk about todays music.<br /> Or at least bands in general. A lot more people are picking up instruments these days. With general interest, or playing to much guitar hero/rock band, we're seeing more garage bands. And with technology today, these small time bands can get their music out there to more than just their mom and the local bar. But this means a few things with the way music is heading as an artform, but most of it good. With more people creating music, we start getting different "sounds", also known as originality. This, in turn, opens up new genres of music. Where once there was just rock, it has seperated into other music types, such as punk, metal, classic, and so on. And even these sub-genres have gotten so big that they have branched off as well: Metal has got Heavy, Power, Progressive, and even "nerd" metal. This goes for all genres. There's light country, rock country, and a few types in between as well.<br /> With new bands turning out new music, listeners are able to find exactly what they want. Very popular over there, but like most metal bands they don't get much airtime on our radio stations.<br />Hammerfall has 5 CD's out, each one becoming an improvement over the last. Many bands were playing but we heard in the distance the faint sound of a trumpet, sax and trombone. We saw this band on stage, just ending their set, I wanted to listen, but they were gone all too soon.<br />I never heard much from them, and found it difficult to find anything by them, but in the past couple of years they have been coming out with videos and it's easier to find their music.<br />Here's one of my favorites by them, Shining On. A good song about staying happy even through crap. They began making music in 1997 and this song is off of their final album "Pause and Reflect". Sadly they broke up shortly after going on tour to promote their new CD in 2007.
